Choose between the ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential and Honeywell Home RTH9585WF1004 by checking your HVAC compatibility, power arrangement, and daily control preferences first. A touchscreen you like is useful only after the thermostat is confirmed to work with your equipment.

This is a research comparison of manufacturer information and the identified Amazon listings, not a hands-on test. You will not find invented comfort scores, installation times, or measured savings here, because your home's setup needs its own assessment.

Know exactly which products you are comparing

The ecobee option in this guide is Smart Thermostat Essential, identified in the Amazon listing by ASIN B0DT9MC2Z9. It is not the Premium, Enhanced, an older ecobee3 lite, or a package that automatically includes additional room sensors.

The Honeywell Home option is the gray RTH9585WF1004 Wi-Fi Smart Color Thermostat, identified by ASIN B075BF6V58. Similar names and newer Honeywell product families should not be treated as interchangeable with that exact model.

Open the listing and check the selected model, package contents, seller, return terms, and compatibility information again before buying. A link identifies the destination we checked, while the offer and available bundles can still change.

We deliberately leave current prices out of this comparison. Your useful comparison is the complete installed cost after any required power accessory, wall trim, setup assistance, or professional installation has been included.

Settle equipment compatibility before features

Gather your HVAC equipment model numbers and the current thermostat model before using either brand's compatibility resources. If your system uses a proprietary communicating control, do not assume a conventional replacement is appropriate simply because the wall display looks familiar.

The ecobee product page states that Essential supports a two-cooling-stage and one-heating-stage arrangement, or two heating stages and one cooling stage, but not both together. That limitation makes the manufacturer's compatibility checker especially important when your system has multiple stages.

Do not turn the phrase “works with most homes” into an approval for yours. Ask about the full installation, including backup heat, zoning controls, and any accessories that your current thermostat operates.

For the Honeywell option, use the support page and documentation for RTH9585WF1004 rather than guidance for a different Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat. Confirm your application with the manufacturer or installer if the documentation does not clearly answer your question.

Work out how the thermostat gets power

A smart thermostat needs an appropriate power arrangement as well as the right control connections. You should establish that arrangement before opening a shopping cart, rather than discovering an extra requirement halfway through installation.

Ecobee says Essential's Power Extender Kit is sold separately and may be needed for a compatible installation without a C wire. The optional trim kit is also separate, so do not assume either accessory is included with the basic thermostat.

Honeywell's C-wire support guidance explains that the C wire supplies power and describes using a compatible adapter where appropriate. Its general statement about adapters in newer packages does not prove that the exact RTH9585WF1004 offer you are viewing includes one.

Ask the seller or manufacturer to confirm the contents of your selected package when they are unclear. An inexpensive thermostat can become the more expensive choice if your particular installation needs additional work.

ecobee Essential: when its documented features fit

Essential gives you scheduling, app control, and a color touchscreen in ecobee's system. The current manufacturer page lists support for Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Alexa, so it is the clearer candidate here if that documented platform flexibility matters to you.

Ecobee also documents SmartSensor support, which can help you plan around the rooms you use. Treat sensors as a separate purchase decision and confirm the exact sensor generation, because Essential does not support the original ecobee Room Sensor.

Do not expect adding a room sensor to create another HVAC zone or independently control every bedroom. Before paying for sensors, ask how the selected rooms influence the temperature decision and what your existing equipment can actually change.

Choose Essential conditionally if its compatibility checker approves your setup and you value its app and supported ecosystem features. Pass on it if its stage limits or other system requirements do not match your installation.

Honeywell Smart Color: when the familiar control style appeals

RTH9585WF1004 is a seven-day programmable Wi-Fi thermostat with a color touchscreen. Its identified Amazon listing specifies the model and gray finish, giving you an exact starting point for checking the product paperwork.

Consider it if you prefer this model's control approach and your equipment is approved for it. Review the actual user guide and app requirements before buying instead of assuming every Honeywell device uses the same app or workflow.

Check the available on-screen controls with everyone who will use the thermostat. A schedule that makes sense to you may still frustrate another household member if basic changes are difficult to find.

Do not pick this model solely because your existing thermostat has the Honeywell name. Brand continuity cannot confirm control voltage, wiring compatibility, accessory support, or the contents of the replacement package.

Compare a normal day in your home

Picture your weekday morning, your usual absence, and the time you return. Decide which parts you want to schedule and which changes you genuinely need to make from a phone.

If several people work different hours, discuss how a temporary temperature change should behave. The most useful feature may be a clearly understood hold or schedule, rather than another automation nobody is prepared to manage.

The room photograph below illustrates why you should think about the surrounding environment, including nearby lamps, electronics, and windows. It does not show either compared thermostat and is not evidence of a tested installation.

A thermostat's location is part of the existing system you should discuss with the installer. Buying another display does not automatically solve uneven temperatures caused by the house, ducts, or equipment.

Write down a short list of daily tasks and check them against the product documentation. You might include changing the target temperature locally, adjusting a schedule, and letting another household member use the app.

Keep savings claims in proportion

Manufacturers may advertise savings relative to a particular baseline and customer group. Those figures do not predict your result, especially if you already manage your existing thermostat carefully.

You can compare your own bills and operating habits after installation, but weather, rates, occupancy, and equipment changes complicate the picture. Avoid attributing every dollar of difference to the thermostat.

Use your complete installed cost when deciding what a possible benefit is worth to you. If the main value is easier scheduling or remote access, it is fine to recognize that practical benefit without promising a payback period.

You should also decide whether utility programs or optional connected services suit your preferences. Read any enrollment terms separately before opting in, since buying a thermostat is not the same decision as joining a program.

When neither option is the right purchase

Stop shopping if your equipment compatibility is unresolved or your current control serves functions neither candidate clearly supports. Manufacturer support or an installer can help you avoid ordering a thermostat that has to be returned.

If your real complaint is a bedroom that stays uncomfortable, start by documenting the room and the operating conditions. ENERGY STAR points out that airflow and duct problems can affect comfort, so a thermostat replacement may address only a small part of the issue.

Keep the existing thermostat working until the replacement plan is confirmed. You do not need to disconnect wires, bridge terminals, or experiment with installer settings to make a buying decision.

Choose ecobee Essential when its approved fit and ecosystem features match your priorities, or consider the specific Honeywell Smart Color when its approved fit and control approach suit you better. In either case, a clear compatibility answer should come before the purchase button.
